Homes by Avi's recycling program leads industry 7/25/2008 9:00:40 AM
Edmonton, July 23, 2008 – Homes by Avi is very proud of their latest GO GREEN initiative. Our construction department has taken a lead when it comes to recycling and the newest program compliments the current office recycling initiatives in place (paper, bottle, battery and cell phone recycling programs). When fully launched the construction recycling program’s goal will be to successfully divert over 75% of our construction waste away from the landfill. In the last month, Homes by Avi’s construction recycling program has diverted over 35,000 lbs of framing waste and over 40,000 lbs of drywall scraps from the landfill. In addition, 2,500 lbs of roof shingles have been recycled and we are currently in negotiations to double this figure in the coming months. Our first cardboard recycling bin has just been implemented for our painting contractors to use, and our goal is to have a cardboard bin in every sub-division by October 31, 2008. Landfill sites account for about 38% of Canada's total methane emissions. About 1/3 of our waste is paper and paperboard. Another third is yard and kitchen waste. The rest is divided among glass, metals, plastics, textiles, wood and other materials. A secondary objective of this construction recycling program is to educate our trade partners on the impact they can have. To be really effective, we must all incorporate the 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover) into our daily routine. Homes by Avi recognizes that reducing the amount of waste we produce is by far the most effective way to battle the flow of garbage into the landfill. -30- For more information contact:Anita Bustos, Corporate Marketing ManagerHomes by AviPhone: (403) 536-7126
